Kellyn Acosta has added another accolade to his career 2016 season. First USMNT call-up and World Cup Qualifier cap, MLS All-Star, Open Cup champion and now, No. 4 on MLSSoccer.com's 24 Under 24 list.
The 21-year-old Homegrown has set career-highs in almost every statistical category, and is one goal shy of his 3-goal season last year. He's played in every single game this season where he is available (missing 3/26 and 9/3 on International duty) and has proved a vital part of Oscar Pareja's system, also seeing time in outside back and winger roles.
Here's what MLSSoccer.com had to say about Acosta:
The crown jewel of FC Dallas’ prized crop of Homegrown players, Acosta has established himself as one of the steadiest central midfielders in the league over the past couple of seasons. Though the 21-year-old serves in a platoon with Carlos Gruezo (No. 8 on this list) and Victor Ulloa, he’s already notched career highs with 28 regular season appearances (20 starts) and two goals and five assists.
Acosta, who has incredible range, solid passing ability and a knack for ball winning, is also capable of lining up at outside back, and has done so on multiple occasions for the US national team. He’ll continue to be a key cog in Oscar Pareja’s starting XI as FC Dallas continue their push for the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup.
The top of the annual ranking has had a very FCD-centric look. With four players now occupying spots in the top 11 on the list (Walker Zimmerman #11, Jesse Gonzalez #9, Carlos Gruezo #8), no other team in the league has more than one occupying the same space.
