With Atiba Harris' St. Kitts and Nevis eliminated from 2016-17 Caribbean Cup play over the weekend, the FC Dallas defender has announced the end of his national team playing career.
Harris, 31, told CONCACAF,com after Sunday's 2-0 loss in extra time to Haiti that it is time for the country's younger generation to take hold of the national team.
"There comes a time when you have to hand over the torch and I feel now is the time that I make a step back and allow the top youth of St. Kitts & Nevis to get an opportunity in the senior team,” Harris told the confederation's website. “We are making strides in football and with the rise we are making, they will certainly flourish."
The team's captain with over 60 caps in 13 years of service to the senior team, Harris now hopes to move into a behind-the-scenes role for his dual-island nation's squad while still continuing his professional career.
"I would like to play a role with St. Kitts & Nevis behind the scenes. I want to be involved one way or another,” Harris said. “I am sure in time, the St. Kitts & Nevis FA and I will sort out in what capacity. I am a proud ambassador for my country and I plan to continue doing that.”
