FRISCO, Texas — Ecuador and Honduras were knocked out of CONMEBOL Copa America and Concacaf Gold Cup contention, respectively, last night following both teams' defeats.
FC Dallas midfielder Carlos Gruezo started and played all 90 minutes for Ecuador in its match against Chile last night. Ecuador fell behind early as Chile scored its first goal of the night in the eighth minute. Gruezo and co. were able to bounce back and equalize later in the half, but Ecuador once again saw itself behind just six minutes into the second half after Alexis Sanchez scored what would eventually be the match-winner.
Ecuador is now mathematically eliminated from the Copa America after playing two games and accumulating zero points. It will play its last group stage match Monday night at 6 p.m. EST.
Fellow FC Dallas midfielder, Bryan Acosta, came on as a substitute for Honduras last night in its match against Curaçao, and he played all 45 minutes of the second half. Honduras fell 1-0 and are also mathematically eliminated from the Gold Cup. Just like Ecuador, Honduras hasn't accumulated any points through two matches of the group stage, and it plays its last game of the tournament Tuesday night against El Salvador at 9 p.m.
