FC Dallas Reserves fall to Chicago Fire, 2-1

Fire Reserves

CHICAGO – The Chicago Fire defeated FC Dallas, 2-1, in MLS Reserve League action Wednesday morning at the Toyota Park Practice Field.

The Fire Reserves got first-half goals from Maicon Santos and Corben Bone before being reduced to 10-men in the 62nd minute, when Wells Thompson was shown his second caution.

Averaging only 20 years of age, the FC Dallas Reserves fought back. Having recently returned from his first U.S. Under-20 National Team camp, FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta, 17, netted a goal in the 80th minute and rang the crossbar in the 83rd minute. The FC Dallas Reserves continued to press and earned a penalty kick in the 91st minute. Unfortunately for Dallas, Bobby Warhsaw’s attempt to convert the kick nailed the left post and the match finished 2-1 in favor of Chicago.

The Fire opened scoring in the 20th minute when Thompson received the ball on the right flank, made a deep run and crossed for Santos, whose one-time shot pinged off the post and into goal to give the Fire the 1-0 lead.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Santos played the ball to Bone. The central midfielder raced towards goal and from just inside the 18-yard-box, unleashed a dipping shot that curved around FC Dallas ‘keeper Chris Seitz to double the Fire’s lead heading into halftime.

The Fire would go down a man in the 62nd minute when Thompson was shown his second yellow card of the match for a high boot on Acosta.

With the man advantage, FC Dallas continued to press and would cut the deficit in the 80th minute when Acosta’s bending shot went past an outstretched Paolo Tornaghi into the side netting.

In the 83rd minute, defender Michael Videira was shown a yellow card for a hard challenge 30 yards from goal. Acosta lined up to take the ensuing free kick and rattled the crossbar before the ball was cleared away by the Fire defense.
