Joey Cummings was not going to be denied.
The FC Dallas Special Olympian had not scored all season and was determined to get on the scoresheet. Like any goal poacher, he wasn’t happy about being subbed off early in the second half against LA Galaxy Special Olympics with his team up 2-1.
“Right before his last sub, he said ‘why are you taking me off I haven’t scored yet? I’ve played all season and haven’t scored,’” said coach Kyle Schroeder. “I told him to not worry and that we would get a chance to score and he did.”
With five minutes left and the Galaxy pushing for an equalizer, Cummings, who had subbed back in, was unmarked at the far post and finished a cross to open his account for the year and get that goal he’s been searching for. After the goal, Cummings did his trademark airplane celebration before giving fellow coach Craig Schroeder a bear hug.
“It was great. It was my first time to score a goal and I loved it,” said Cummings grinning from ear to ear. “My teammates helped me a lot. We work so hard.”
Cummings’ goal sealed a 3-1 win for his FC Dallas squad winning their 2015 season finale.
“I was amazed,” said Cummings about the win. “This is why I do this because I love it.”
