FRISCO - Injuries and international call-ups have taken their toll on FC Dallas and the Portland Timbers, with both teams missing key players ahead of Saturday night's match at Providence Park.
Portland Timbers
OUT: Defender Gbenga Arokoyo (Achilles), Defender Chance Myers (hamstring).
QUESTIONABLE: Forward Darren Mattocks (adductor), Midfielder Jack Barmby (ankle).
INTERNATIONAL: Midfielder Darlington Nagbe (United States), Midfielder David Guzmán (Costa Rica), Defender Alvas Powell (Jamaica).
Portland will be without a pair of defenders in Arokoyo and Myers for the match. Arokoyo ruptured his left Achilles tendon back in January and was lost for the season, while Myers is yet to play a match for Portland since arriving in the offseason from Sporting Kansas City.
Of much greater importance to Portland is whether Mattocks and Barmby will be able to play. In six MLS seasons, Mattocks has scored 21 times, although just twice for Portland since the Jamaican arrived from Vancouver before the 2016 season. Barmby has six appearances for the Timbers in 2017, but no starts.
Much like FC Dallas, this FIFA International window has hit the Timbers hard. The skilled Nagbe started for the U.S. in its 2-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago, sharing time on the field with Kellyn Acosta. Portland will desperately miss all three players, who have combined for 10 assists this season.
FC Dallas
OUT: Paxton Pomykal (ankle strain), Walker Zimmerman (MCL strain).
INTERNATIONAL: Matt Hedges (United States), Kellyn Acosta (United States), Maynor Figueroa (Honduras), Tesho Akindele (Canada).
Pomykal has returned to training with Dallas this past week, but is still trying to regain fitness after undergoing surgery on his left knee on May 18. The 17-year-old is still at least a week away from a full recovery. Zimmerman has kept busy after suffering his injury during the home match against Houston, but it will still be a while before he returns to a game day roster.
Dallas was one of the hardest hit MLS teams this FIFA International window. Hedges and Acosta have been with the U.S. National Team since early this week, with Acosta coming on as substitute in Thursday night's match. Figueroa went the distance for Honduras in a CONCACAF qualifier against Mexico on the same night. Akindele has been training with the Canadian National Team ahead of a friendly against Curacao, but will rejoin Dallas before the match against Portland.
