FRISCO - In only his eighth appearance for the senior United States Men's National Team, Kellyn Acosta picked up his first World Cup Qualifying start and played all 90 minutes of a 1-1 draw in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
It was also the second appearance of the week for Acosta with the U.S., as he made a substitute appearance during the 2-0 win for the Americans against Trinidad and Tobago last Thursday, also a World Cup Qualifying match.
Acosta was joined by teammate Matt Hedges for this cycle of qualifying matches. Hedges was an unused substitute in both games.
USMNT head coach Bruce Arena deployed Acosta alongside Michael Bradley in the United States midfield, and also placed Acosta on free kick duty several times for the United States during the game.
The result marked only the third time the United States has been able to come away with a point from a World Cup Qualifying match at the Estadio Azteca. Furthermore, it's only the third time in 16 World Cup Qualifying matches in Mexico that the U.S. has emerged with a point.
The result puts the U.S. into a tie for second place in the CONCACAF Hexagonal with Costa Rica on eight points, while Mexico remains top of the Hexagonal with 14 points.
The four other Hexagonal teams will conclude this cycle of games on Tuesday night, including FC Dallas defender Maynor Figueroa with Honduras.
