Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Match Recap: FC Dallas 4, OKC Energy FC 1

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (Tuesday, June 16) – With two goals from Michael Barrios and another two from David Texeira, FC Dallas cruised to a 4-1 win over USL PRO side Oklahoma City Energy FC to advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 in front of a standing room only crowd at TCU’s Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.

FC Dallas opened the match with a point-blank shot by Barrios just 19 seconds into the game. The chance was set up by Kyle Bekker, who sent a through ball to Barrios at the top of the area. The diminutive midfielder went to the outside before slipping a low shot back towards the right post. Fortunately for Oklahoma City, goalkeeper Evan Newton was in good position and made a strong, diving save to his right side to keep the match scoreless. 

Dallas had another chance in the 14th minute, when Michel curled a ball into the area for Texeira. Energy FC defender Jacob Van Compernolle won the header and cleared the ball only as far as Fabian Castillo. The midfielder went around two defenders before attempting to pick out the back post, but had his shot deflect off the bar before it was cleared away by an OKC Energy FC defender.





FC Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal scored by Texeira. The play began on the left flank when Castillo received the ball isolated against a single defender. The speedy Colombian waited until the defender was flat-footed before accelerating away down the sideline. Castillo turned the corner and walked down the end line before passing the ball back to the feet of Texeira. The striker finished easily with a hard strike to the left of goalkeeper Evan Newton from very close range.

FC Dallas took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute. The goal was scored by Barrios, who was able to finish a chance into an empty net after 17-year-old Alejandro Zendejas fired a shot from the left side of net towards the back post. Newton was able to make a diving save to his left side, but the goalkeeper pushed the rebound into the path of Barrios, who easily gave Dallas a two-goal advantage.





The lead grew to three in the 36th minute following an OKC Energy FC corner. FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz gobbled up the cross and quickly launched the ball outside to Barrios. The midfielder skipped past a challenge near midfield and was in alone on goal from the midway point. An Oklahoma City defender caught Barrios near the top of the area, but he was able to shield off the challenge and finish to the left of Newton to make it 3-0 heading into halftime.


FC Dallas gained a 4-0 advantage in the 51st minute on Texeira’s second of the match. Barrios did most of the work down the left flank, beating two defenders before crossing the ball into the area. Texeira finished the chance with his first touch, knocking a simple volley just inside the back post for the brace.





Oklahoma City pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute on a goal scored by Danni Konig. The forward received the ball just inside the area, off to the left side of goal with his back to net. Konig feinted one way and went the other before bending a shot over the hands of Seitz to make the final score, 4-1.

We were very effective in front of the goal. We will keep building. As we said last week, this group believes in what they do and what they are, and we're happy to get a win. That's important for chemistry and the mentality of the group.


Building the offense's confidence with 4 goals tonight...
This team naturally scores goals. We have proven that before. We have gotten in that patch of not scoring the last couple games and sometimes it's heavy for the players and you need a game where they can get their confidence back, be sharp and create options, and today was the case. They did a very good job on that part. The professionalism was there for them, and the execution was really good. I give credit to that group of players for keeping the belief and the game rewarded them today.


On Michael Barrios' performance tonight...
Coming into Major League Soccer is a different monster. It's difficult for me to remember players who come to this league and adapt right away. They need that bit of time, and Michael has been growing. It's good for me to see him be a part of the game the way he did today. He did well.


The game's atmosphere at TCU...
It was nice. I really want to recognize the presence of our fans today, and also the presence of the Oklahoma City Energy fans. That was a nice atmosphere here. It's good to see how the game brings people together. I really appreciate that our fans made the trip here and joined us for a well-deserved victory. And they deserved it, too. They gave us a lot of energy to keep going.

The opportunities that I had tonight were great. I am grateful for my teammates. Without them I couldn't have scored. I am thankful for them. We have a solid team. It's never about one player. It's always about the team. 

Were you able to show what you are capable of tonight?
Everyone is ready to play on this team. They just need the opportunity. Once they get that chance to play they will do their best. They will do what is best for the team. Today was just my turn. I was happy to be able to take my chances well and contribute.

Do you think tonight's result will give the team confidence?
Yes. There were many things to improve since our last match. There was a good opportunity today to show what we are capable of... an opportunity to show that we can get through a difficult situation. We came (to the match) with humbleness today. We were focused only on getting the result we needed tonight.

On making his professional debut...
I've been waiting for this for a while, but the main thing was getting the win tonight. It was great to get out there and do well for the team. It was a big moment for me but the main thing was getting through this round. It was a tricky game. We aren't used to this field. It was a difficult match, but we were able to get the win. It was great to get on the field and contribute to it.
What was going through your mind when your number was called?
I was hoping today was the day... I figured with the way the game was going that it was going to be my debut. At halftime, Fabian [Bazan] told me I was going in right after Coy [Craft]. The fourth goal kind of sealed it for me. My teammates have all been very supportive.
