Fresh off a 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night - including Fabian Castillo's incredible assist to Maxi Urruti's goal, which we can't stop talking about - FC Dallas will switch gears from MLS regular season to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup when they travel south on Wednesday to play the Houston Dynamo in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
This will be the team's third match in the Open Cup this year - the first was a win against USL affiliate Oklahoma City Energy FC back in mid-June, and it took all thirty minutes of extra time and several rounds of penalty kicks before Dallas came out with the victory, thanks to rookie Colin Bonner who netted the winning PK.
Their second appearance was one month ago, when they played the Colorado Rapids and again needed extra time to gain the lead. The Rapids struck first with a goal late in the first half, but Mauro Diaz found an equalizer in the 68th minute to keep Dallas in the game, and then Urruti scored the game-winner five minutes into extra time to send the team into the quarterfinals.
On the other side, Houston has defeated San Antonio FC in a 4-0 shutout and Sporting Kansas City with a 3-1 win to get to the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Dallas and Houston have a historic rivalry, and the most recent matchup between the two Texas teams was an MLS game at Toyota Stadium on June 2, which included a two hour rain delay and ended in a 1-1 draw. If Dallas wins on Wednesday, they'll advance to the semifinals to play the winner of the LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders game and we'll find out later which team will host that game.
Wednesday night's Open Cup action will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and can be streamed through the Houston Dynamo website.
