Two of the teams making early statements in Major League Soccer meet on Sunday afternoon when FC Dallas return home to play host to the New York Red Bulls. FCD lost their second game of the season last weekend, falling 4-1 at D.C. United to drop out of the top spot in the Western Conference for the first time. The Red Bulls stretched their undefeated run to three games and moved within a point of the top spot in the East, coming back for a 1-1 draw at the Columbus Crew last weekend.

FC Dallas fell to their second defeat of the campaign, D.C. United grabbing a 4-1 win on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium on Saturday evening. FC Dallas sit in a tie atop the Western Conference with 16 points from eight games.
LAST MATCH
- Dallas opened the scoring just 12 minutes in. Receiving a pass from Fabian Castillo, Blas Perez sent a one-touch pass to Mauro Diaz at the top of the box. He slipped around United fullback Cristian Fernandez and hammered a shot home from 12 yards out.
- FCD then went down a in the 39th minute when Zach Loyd was sent off following a second yellow card after a rash, studs-up challenge on United midfielder Davy Arnaud.
- United were level deep into first-half stoppage time. Nick DeLeon played a ball down the touchline to Eddie Johnson, and his cross was picture-perfect, finding Fabian Espindola inside the six for an easy, headed finish.
- The home side took the lead on the hour. A shot from substitute Conor Doyle from 8 yards out caromed off Dallas 'keeper Chris Seitz and fell perfectly for an onrushing Bobby Boswell, who made no mistake.
- United made it 3-1 in the 64th minute when Espindola skipped down the left touchline and set up Sean Franklin, then Espindola scored his second and United's fourth five minutes later, finishing off a cross from Chris Rolfe.
- Dallas finished two men down after Michel was shown a straight red card in second-half stoppage time for violent conduct after taking a swat at United midfielder Rolfe.
- FCD head coach Oscar Pareja made two changes to the team that got a late winner for a 2-1 defeat of Toronto FC at Toyota Stadium. Zach Loyd came into the back four for Kellyn Acosta, and Blas Perez started up top in place of David Texeira.

- FC Dallas conceded a season-high four goals, and have allowed seven goals in their two defeats on the season.
- “We wanted to control the width of the field to see what is coming, especially on our left and their right. And also try to extend the line and support because we knew that they were going to get some numbers up,” said FCD head coach Oscar Pareja. “That didn’t work because we … conceded the second one very early. It was too early and it gave them confidence.”
- Mauro Diaz scored his third goal of the season, his first since March 29. But he was then forced from the field before the end of the first half with an injury.
- There will be two forced changes this weekend after Zach Loyd and Michel were both sent off. Michel had started each of the last five matches, while Loyd was in the first XI in three of the previous four.
- FCD has yet to be shut out – and have yet to record a defensive shutout – along with the Chicago Fire the only teams without a shutout on both ends. Seattle Sounders FC have also scored a goal in each game; Chivas USA and Portland still have yet to record a defensive shutout.
- “We’re obviously going to play defense first, and then try and get one or chances to win the game, and that was our mindset going into it,” goalkeeper Chris Seitz said. “Obviously things changed decently quick and we had to adjust from there.”
NEW YORK RED BULLS
The New York Red Bulls extended their undefeated run to three matches, coming back for a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Crew Stadium. The Red Bulls sit in a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from nine matches on the season.
LAST MATCH
- The Crew took the lead late in the first half. New York defender Kosuke Kimura dragged Justin Meram to the ground as he tried to get on the end of a cross, and referee Geoff Gamble pointed to the spot. Jairo Arrieta stepped up for the penalty kick and slammed a hard shot off of the underside of the crossbar.
- The Red Bulls leveled terms in the 66th minute, when Bradley Wright-Phillips made a juggling turn just outside the Crew box and hit a perfectly placed volley inside the far post, Crew 'keeper Steve Clark powerless to stop the shot that bounced off the inside of the bar and into the goal.
- Red Bulls boss Mike Petke made no changes to the team that strolled to a 4-0 win against the Houston Dynamo at Red Bull Arena.

- The Red Bulls extended their undefeated run to three games with the draw in Columbus, their fifth tie in nine matches this season.
- “I was pleased with many aspects of the performance,” Red Bulls coach Mike Petke said. “Obviously, after the first seven minutes we should’ve been up 2-0 [on] the two breakaways. After that, I felt that if we kept that pressure up, we kept that work rate up and we were able to find those little pockets to get the ball, we were going to be OK.”
- Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his fourth goal in the last two games to bring the Red Bulls back for the draw. Wright-Phillips is now third in the MLS Golden Boot standings with five goals, behind Seattle’s Clint Dempsey (eight) and Chivas USA’s Erick Torres (six).
- “He did well, I’m glad he got another goal. All the guys did well, I think we had a large chunk of possession tonight, which I’m pleased with. Our possession game is growing as well,” Petke said.
- Lloyd Sam collected his fourth assist of the season, his first since April 5, setting up the Wright-Phillips goal.
- “When Lloyd’s on the ball he likes to have an end product. I gambled on it really, I don’t know if he mishit it or if it ended up falling to me I tried to get a good touch on it and get a strike on goal because I think I let two in the first half go away so I just wanted to get a shot on target,” Wright-Phillips said.
- While he was available, Tim Cahill did not feature for the Red Bulls – but is expected to be available for the FC Dallas match. Cahill has not played since March 30 while suffering from a hamstring injury.
- “It’s a lot tactically if we play Tim in the midfield,” Petke said. “I like the defensive stability there and also the threat that he can get forward, but he’s very good in the defensive block … I could press him forward and like the odds of him getting his head on something up in the box. Like I said, it all comes into play ... he’s comfortable playing so many different positions and he’s effective playing so many different positions. But the first and foremost thing is for him to be 100 percent healthy.”
