If the San Jose Earthquakes are to gain a place in the MLS Cup Playoffs, there will have to be a lot of goals when they meet FC Dallas on Saturday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes need to win, have Colorado lose -- and score at least 13 goals -- to clinch a postseason berth, following their scoreless draw at the LA Galaxy last weekend. FC Dallas have been officially eliminated from postseason consideration, but are coming off a 2-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC last weekend in their home finale.

- The teams are meeting for the third time this season. Fabian Castillo scored the game’s lone goal in the 33rd minute for an FC Dallas victory May 25 in Frisco; a Michel penalty kick capped an FCD comeback from two goals down for a 2-2 draw Aug. 24.
- FC Dallas hasn’t won in Santa Clara since 2009. The Quakes have won two of the four home meetings since, with two draws.
- The first game win ended a six-game FCD winless streak vs. San Jose. FC Dallas had last defeated the Earthquakes on June 5, 2010, a 2-0 victory in Frisco.

- The Earthquakes got off to a flying start with two goals inside the first 16 minutes. In the eighth minute, midfielder Cordell Cato carried the ball all the way through the Dallas 18-yard box and delivered a perfect square pass for onrushing forward Alan Gordon, who knocked a low, hard, first-time shot to beat Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez.
- Eight minutes later the lead was doubled. Quakes midfielder Rafael Baca sent a perfect chip over the top and to the feet of Steven Beitashour, who showed a soft touch in calmly volleying home past a helpless Fernandez.
- FC Dallas made an immediate response in the 19th minute. A cross from Michel found Je-Vaughn Watson just outside of the San Jose area, and he headed the ball forward to Blas Perez, who was able to stretch and poke the ball toward the net just before ‘Quakes keeper Jon Busch could reach it.
- In the 69th minute, Quakes center back Victor Bernardez made contact with Perez in the box and referee Baldomero Toledo pointed to the spot. Michel stepped up to take the penalty kick and calmly chipped a left-footed shot into the left side of the net.
- The Quakes went a man down in the 81st minute when Justin Morrow was shown a straight red card for taking out Dallas substitute Ramon Nunez on a breakaway. Both teams then saw a player sent off in the 86th minute when Toledo expelled Bernardez and FCD substitute Kenny Cooper.

The San Jose Earthquakes saw their three-game winning streak come to an end but maintained their unbeaten run, playing to a scoreless draw with the LA Galaxy on Sunday evening at StubHub Center. The Quakes are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 48 points from 33 matches.

- Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo made four saves, including diving stops on a Steven Lenhart header from a corner kick in the 27th minute and a Chris Wondolowski header in the 40th minute.
- Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch was called upon to make three saves.
- Quakes interim head coach Mark Watson made two changes to the team that took a 1-0 victory against the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium. Victor Bernardez came into the back four for Jason Hernandez, and Steven Lenhart returned from suspension in place of Alan Gordon.

- While the Earthquakes extended their undefeated streak to six games, they saw their playoff ambitions all but put to an end. They must defeat FC Dallas and have Colorado lose in Vancouver -- and also score at least 13 more goals than the Rapids.
- “We knew we had to be smart about the way we approached the game,” Quakes head coach Mark Watson said. “If you go too aggressive, throw too much forward too early and they score, then you’ve really dug yourself a hole. . . . To keep the Galaxy at bay and have a bunch of chances, I think it’s a fantastic performance from the guys. I thought we deserved a little bit better.”
- Said Chris Wondolowski: “We knew we needed a result. We came in here and I think that to be truthfully honest I think the points kind of spoken for it. The second half of the season we played well and we feel that we can come out and try to play against anyone, unfortunately we backed ourselves into a corner, dug ourselves into a hole too deep and we couldn’t get out of it and it’s unfortunate.”
- The club record for goals in a game is six, set in 1996 and 1999. The MLS record is eight goals, by the LA Galaxy in an 8-1 win at Dallas in 1998.
- The Earthquakes recorded a third consecutive shutout for the first time this season, and have not allowed a goal in 341 minutes, the third-longest streak in MLS this season.
- They have recorded five clean sheets in their last six matches, and have allowed just one goal in that time, dating back to Sept. 8.
- On Wednesday, the Earthquakes secured passage to the knockout stage of the CONCACAF Champions League next spring with a 1-0 victory against Guatemalan side CD Heredia at Buck Shaw Stadium. The game’s lone goal came from Chris Wondolowski in the 62nd minute.

FC Dallas put a stop to their winless run after five matches in their final home game of the season, a 2-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday afternoon at Toyota Stadium. FCD is in eighth place in the Western Conference with 44 points from 33 matches.

- FC Dallas goal took the lead in the 65th minute. A free kick was expertly delivered by second-half substitute Michel and headed home by defender Matt Hedges, who didn't give Sounders FC goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann a chance to react.
- FCD put the game away in the 87th minute. From a frantic sequence in Seattle’s 18-yard box, David Ferreira fired an attempt on goal and the shot glanced off a Sounders FC defender right to Michel, who gladly slotted the ball into the net.
- FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made four changes to the team that lost 3-2 to the Chicago Fire at Toyota Stadium. Kellyn Acosta and Walker Zimmerman came into the back four for Stephen Keel and Zach Loyd, and Peter Luccin and Kenny Cooper started in place of Michel and Mauro Diaz.

- The victory vs. Seattle put an end to a five-game winless run for FC Dallas, since a 3-1 win vs. Vancouver on Sept. 7. It was just FCD’s third victory in league play since the start of June.
- For Schellas Hyndman, it was his final match in charge of the team at Toyota Stadium. The FCD head coach has announced he will be stepping down following the completion of the season, his sixth season with the club.
- “[Friday] was a difficult day for the club, for our owners, for the players and for my family,” Hyndman said. “We hoped that the players would show up today and have a good match. We hoped that they would win for all those people I just mentioned and our fans. It’s been difficult, the last week, but it is a great ending for my career here at FC Dallas. It couldn’t be any better. We showed up, the guys played with urgency, they played with character.”
- For the third time this season, Michel scored a goal and added an assist in the same game. When he has scored each of his three goals in MLS, he has also recorded an assist.
- “I feel like above the players, above the directors, above the coaches, above everything is the club,” Michel said. “That was my homage to the club. The club opened their doors for me at a tough time for me in my career. … In a few years or months, [players] are not going to be here anymore, [coaches] are not going to be here anymore, but the club stays. So that was my way of thanking the club and saying it’s above everything.”
- Peter Luccin made his first MLS start, playing 82 minutes in the center of midfield. Luccin had made his MLS debut two weeks earlier vs. Real Salt Lake, after missing the first six months of the season with a knee injury.
- After scoring three goals in the previous two matches coming off the substitutes’ bench, Kenny Cooper started his first match since July 20, playing as the target striker.
- Chris Seitz made his seventh league start of the season in goal and his third in a row. He recorded his second shutout of the campaign ñ his first coming in his first start, March 23 vs. Real Salt Lake.
- “We know what a great person he is from what he did last year. He received the MLS Humanitarian of the Year Award. That just says what a good person he is and what a good family he comes from,” Hyndman said. “I can’t be any happier for him to play his last game of the season at home, playing well. He is a great guy and a wonderful representative of FC Dallas.”
- There was a change at halftime after Ferreira and Jackson nearly came to blows on the field after the whistle blew. Jackson was removed for Blas Perez; both players received sanctions from the league Disciplinary Committee.
- “When they came into the locker room, they were still going at each other and I decided to pull [Jackson] out of the lineup,” Hyndman said. “We can never reward bad behavior with professional athletes, or with children. We’re trying to win the game and if you can’t get it right in the locker room, you can’t get it right on the field. So that was the decision I made and I think we responded to it.”
- Walker Zimmerman made his first league appearance and first start since June 29, coming into central defense. FCD has kept a clean sheet in two of Zimmerman’s three starts.
- “The past few months I’ve been dealing with a few issues on the injury side. It felt great to get back out there with my teammates and give everything I had for coach’s last game and give everything I can to our fans for the last home game,” Zimmerman said.
