FRISCO, TX -- Santos Laguna defeated reigning Liga MX Champions Club Leon in front of a raucous crowd at Toyota Stadium Sunday evening. The 2-0 margin was provided by forward Andres Renteria (above, far left), who tallied on either side of the halftime whistle.
The first goal came just seconds before the half on a quick counterattack by Santos Laguna. Renteria's speed put him in one-on-one with Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough and the Colombian striker's cool finish broke the stalemate, much to the delight of the Laguna fans occupying the east side of Toyota Stadium.
Renteria's insurance goal was scored in the 59th minute following a save by Yarbrough. But the rebound fell right back to the forward who made no mistake with his second shot to clinch the 2-0 win.
Santos Laguna goalkeepers Julio Gonzalez and Oswaldo Sanchez split duties in net between the first and second halves, respectively, and made two saves apiece to claim the shutout.
