Dallas begins three-game road swing with a loss in Utah
SANDY, Utah (Saturday, August 20) – FC Dallas (13-7-6, 45 points) fell to Western Conference-foe Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, 1-0. After a scoreless match for the opening 77 minutes, Jamison Olave struck for the home side to break Dallas’ four-game unbeaten streak.
In a back-and-forth match all night, FCD had their first quality chance in the 21st minute as forward Maxi Urruti was able to dispossesses Salt Lake defender Justen Glad as he tried to bring down a long pass off his chest running towards his own goal. Urruti found himself all alone with the Nick Rimando 20 yards from goal and tried to work his way around the RSL keeper on the right side, but put a low-angle shot just over the cross bar from the edge of the six-yard box.
Real Salt Lake got their first look at goal in the 37th minute, as Javier Morales found forward Joao Plata behind Dallas defender Aubrey David’s right shoulder. Plata sent a quick shot at goal, but David was able to recover and break up the play with a sliding block out for a corner.
The teams went into halftime scoreless and FC Dallas came out with several scoring chances to start the second 45.
In the 52th minute, Michael Barrios lost defender Demar Phillips down the right side with a stutter step before chasing down a long ball played in from David towards the touch line. The winger sent a soft, rising shot in towards goal that glanced off the cross bar and out of play as Rimando back-peddled to get back into position.
Two minutes later, Urruti would get his second scoring chance of the night as Kellyn Acosta made a clean tackle on Luke Mulholland that sent the ball towards the 18 yard box. Urruti picked it up in-stride and sent a low shot on goal that was denied by a diving Rimando.
Salt Lake would score the lone goal of the match in the 78th minute off a quick corner kick. Chris Seitz made perhaps his best save on the night pushing a fast shot over the bar as Plata sent a half-volley on target from the top of the penalty area. On the ensuing corner, Plata played a short corner to Morales, who sent a cross into the box that was blocked in front. From almost an identical position as Plata’s attempt, Jamison Olave volleyed a shot of his own just under the bar for his second goal on the year.
Dallas would have one final chance to level the match late, in the 2nd minute of added time as Acosta sent a corner in from the left side into the box. Ryan Hollingshead was able to connect on a header, but sent his shot wide of goal before the final whistle.
FC Dallas will now head straight from Salt Lake City to Nicaragua to play their second CONCACAF Champions League group stage match against Real Esteli FC on Wednesday night before heading to Houston to face the Dynamo in MLS action on Aug. 27th.
