FCD involved in first Video Review in MLS history

CHESTER, Pa. (Saturday, Aug. 5) – FC Dallas (9-5-7, 34 points) fell to the Philadelphia Union (8-10-5, 29 points), 3-1, on Saturday night at Talen Energy Stadium behind a two-goal performance from C.J. Sapong.
The Union struck early in the match in the 17th minute, as the leading-scorer Sapong connecting on a cross from Haris Medunjanin after a give-and-go with Ilsinho at the top of the 18-yard box.
Just five minutes later, Ilsinho would double the lead with a volley from outside the penalty area that Chris Seitz couldn’t stop to his right. Off a Union throw-in, Ryan Hollingshead cleared the restart from the area with a header that fell right to the midfielder, who needed just one touch to make it 2-0.
It would be Sapong again in the 68th minute, scoring his second on the night after the Union dispossessed Michael Barrios off a Dallas throw-in. Sapong played a through ball to Ilsinho, who’s chance was stopped by Seitz in goal for FCD, but the midfielder was able to toe-poke the rebound over to a wide-open Sapong in front of goal.
The game would find the history books in the 80th minute as Cristian Colman ran down a loose ball inside the Philadelphia 18, getting a touch on a shot at goal, but making contact with Union goalkeeper John McCarthy going for the rebound. Maxi Urruti swept in from the right flank and put the ball away for what would’ve been Dallas’ first of the night. After the newly-implemented Video Review process however, referee Ricardo Salazar determined the contact between Colman and McCarthy to be a foul and the goal was disallowed. It was the first instance of a review taking place in an MLS match, taking place on the opening night of use after being introduced officially this week.
Dallas’ Michael Barrios would spoil the clean sheet late with a stoppage-time goal. Roland Lamah a won a ball back in the middle of the park and played the winger through into the penalty area, where Barrios chipped a shot past McCarthy and inside the right post for the club’s lone goal on the night.
FCD is back in action at home on Saturday, Aug. 12 as the Colorado Rapids visit Toyota Stadium.
