Homegrown Kellyn Acosta nets second goal of the season in draw

SAN JOSE, Calif.  – FC Dallas appeared poised to take a full three points from Avaya Stadium for the second straight trip, but Jahmir Hyka found the equalizer for the San Jose Earthquakes in the 94th minute as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw.

FC Dallas had San Jose under pressure in the first three minutes of the match on a play created by Cristian Colman. The Paraguayan got the ball on the end line, off to San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham’s left side, and ripped a cross through the area that just missed connecting with Roland Lamah. The FC Dallas winger recovered to eventually gather the pass and sent a shot towards the far post, but his attempt also skipped wide of its intended target.

San Jose returned fire in the 17th minute, when a cross that was played in from the right flank by Nick Lima was redirected on goal by Chris Wondolowski at the far corner of the six-yard box. FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez did well to track the ball the entire way. The 21-year old got his right hand to the shot, pushing it up and over the crossbar for an Earthquakes corner kick.

Michael Barrios nearly scored a highlight-reel goal for Dallas in the 26th minute. Following a free kick 30 yards from goal, Barrios collected the half-clearance at the top of the area, brought down the ball with his chest and hit a line drive shot that fluttered just wide of the post to Bingham’s left.

One minute later, Colman outmuscled a San Jose defender and pushed a ball past Bingham, sending the striker on a race to the loose ball at the far post. Colman arrived a split-second after the ball clipped the outside of the post but was unable to corral the ball before it crossed the end line.

San Jose dominated the possession battle throughout the first half, but Dallas had better looks at goal. More importantly, FCD completed its seventh consecutive half of shutout soccer at the three-year-old Avaya Stadium.

Maxi Urruti and Lamah combined to force Bingham off his line to stop a point-blank chance inside the area in the 61st minute. Urruti brought the ball down with his chest and turned on his defender in one fluid move before cutting back a delivering a through ball to Lamah. The Belgian tried to poke a shot past the charging goalkeeper but Bingham caught a piece of the attempt to keep the match scoreless.

Going for the win, FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja switched his formation from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1 with the addition of Javier Morales in the 68th minute.

The move paid off in the 78th minute, when Morales controlled the ball in midfield and found Urruti at the top of the box. An Earthquakes defender poked the ball loose from Urruti but the tackle sent the ball to Kellyn Acosta at the back post. The U.S. international picked out the far side netting with a sliding attempt to give Dallas a 1-0 lead late.

FC Dallas was just seconds away from their fourth straight clean sheet at Avaya Stadium until the 94th minute and final minute of the match. Chris Wondolowski headed a long ball from the top of the box towards the left side, where it bounced once before Hyka sent a touch past a diving Gonzalez in goal.
