FC Dallas extends home unbeaten streak to nine games at Toyota Stadium
FRISCO, Texas (Saturday, April 9) – FC Dallas (3-1-2, 11 points) came from behind twice to tie San Jose, 2-2, tonight at Toyota Stadium.
San Jose struck first in just the fourth minute when Simon Dawkins played a ball up the left flank to speedy forward Quincy Amarikwa. The California native picked his head up and found Alberto Quintero open at the back post. The late run by the midfielder put him in perfect position to capitalize and Quintero cracked a first touch shot just inside the post to put the Earthquakes up 1-0.
Dallas tilted possession in its favor for the next 23 minutes of action and earned four consecutive corner kicks between the 27th and 29th minutes. Referee Alan Kelly let play continue after Dallas forward Maxi Urruti was knocked to the ground by Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham following the home side’s fifth corner of the match.
Seven minutes later, Kelly pointed to the spot after a trio of passes put right back Ryan Hollingshead in on goal. Tesho Akindele started the play, bringing down a long pass out of the back and pushing the ball inside to Michael Barrios. Barrios led Hollingshead with a pass into the area with his first touch but San Jose’s Shaun Francis clipped the defender’s heels, forcing Kelly to make the call.
Akindele stepped to the spot to take the kick and sent Bingham the wrong direction before tying the match, 1-1, with a shot to the goalkeeper’s right side. The goal is the second of the season for Akindele, who now has a goal or an assist in his last three despite coming off the bench in two of those matches.
San Jose took a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute on a goal scored by Chris Wondolowski. The striker’s 113th MLS goal was set up by Amarikwa, who grabbed control of the ball near midfield, ran at the Dallas’ back four and slipped a pass inside for Wondolowski’s well-timed run. In alone on goal, Wondolowski pushed a simple first-touch past FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz to take the lead.
Dallas responded quickly and tied the match again in the 62nd minute. Following a corner kick taken by substitute Mauro Rosales, Walker Zimmerman fought to keep the ball alive in San Jose’s third of the pitch. Eventually, the ball came to Urruti who sent a looping cross to the back post for Fabian Castillo. The winger blew by a defender before centering a pass that was intercepted by San Jose defender Victor Bernardez. Unfortunately for San Jose, the big defender’s clearance attempt was straight at goal, beating Bingham to his left side to level the match.
Urruti kept up the pressure for the home side and headed a shot off the crossbar after a Bingham save in the 69th minute.
Bingham made another outstanding save on an attempt hammered low towards the near post by defender Maynor Figueroa in the 71st minute.
Dallas’ Carlos Gruezo whistled a shot just over the bar on the final kick of the match as the teams finished locked at two goals apiece.
