Coy Craft and Michael Barrios create goals for defending U.S. Open Cup Champions
DALLAS – FC Dallas scored just before the final whistle to advance, 2-1, against the Tulsa Roughnecks tonight at Westcott Field at Southern Methodist University.
Ryan Hollingshead nearly gave FC Dallas a 1-0 lead in the third minute following a corner kick. The serve from Mauro Diaz was clear out as far as Paxton Pomykal. The Homegrown put a dangerous ball back into the area, which was won by Matt Hedges. The FC Dallas captain chested the ball into the path of Hollingshead, who struck a first-touch side volley just over the crossbar.
Tulsa nearly got on the board in the 28th minute when Joaquin Rivas crossed a ball to the Roughneck’s left flank. Juan Pablo Caffa was left unmarked and attempted to beat FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz to the back post, but his volley attempt sailed just wide of the left post.
Ryan Hollingshead found Coy Craft with a simple pass on Dallas’ left side in the 31st minute. One of four FC Dallas Homegrown players on the field, Craft cut inside and cracked a low shot towards the back post. Tulsa goalkeeper Fabian Cerda looked to have the space covered, but Craft slipped a shot under his left arm to give them MLS side a 1-0 lead.
Tulsa fired right back, just one minute later, with a long ball over the top of the FC Dallas defense. Joey Calistri brought the ball down, free of the defense, and tried to beat Seitz from close range, but Seitz came up with a left-handed save to preserve the lead for FC Dallas.
Tulsa forced a turnover in FC Dallas territory in the 59th minute. Former Colorado Rapids midfielder Kosuke Kimura pounced on the loose ball, drove towards goal and fired a low shot past Seitz into the corner of the net to make it 1-1.
Mauro Diaz whipped in a perfect ball to Hedges on a corner kick in the 68th minute. The defender got off a good shot but Tulsa’s Cerda was in perfect position to make an easy save.
One minute later, Reggie Cannon broke free down the right flank and delivered a cross into the area for Cristian Colman. The Paraguayan got his foot on the ball, redirecting a shot towards the far post, but Cerda made another save to keep the match tied, 1-1.
Hedges walked the ball in from midfield, cut by a defender and attempted to pick out the side netting in the 85th minute. Fortunately for the USL side, Cerda was alert and made a diving save to his left side.
Diaz put Hollingshead through in stoppage-time, the pass was deflected by a Tulsa defender, directly to Colman, but the forward could not keep his shot under the bar.
Just before the final whistle, FC Dallas found the back of the net after a flurry of chances and epic goalkeeping from Cerda, who robbed Tesho Akindele of a goal at the back post. Dallas wouldn’t be denied and finally broke through on an own goal knocked into the back of the net by defender Modou Jadama. The defender stepped in to deny Michael Barrios of a second sharp cross and inadvertently beat Cerda with a redirection just inside the near post.
