SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Walter Martinez and Chris Wondolowski each scored a goal to help MLS original Ramiro Corrales go out a winner in the final game of his career, and the San Jose Earthquakes topped FC Dallas 2-1 on Saturday in the season finale for both teams.
Martinez, who made his MLS debut in May, scored his second goal of the season for the Earthquakes, who needed to score 13 goals and to have the Rapids lose on Sunday in order to return to the playoffs.
Wondolowski scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the second half.
Stephen Keel scored in stoppage time for Dallas, who also said goodbye to an important club figure in head coach Schellas Hyndman, who announced earlier this month that he will step down at the end of the season after five and a half years on the job.
Martinez missed a shot high to the top left corner in the early going, but came back in the 27th minute to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 edge.
Justin Morrow sent a forward pass along the left sideline, where Martinez picked it up and played a dangerous cross that skipped past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz, who was caught going for Steven Lenhart’s dummy run in front of the goal.
Wondolowski added his goal, a sharp drive in the upper right corner, in the 57th minute. He was assisted by Lenhart and Shea Salinas.
Corrales, making his first start since Sept. 14, had two good scoring chances in the first 11 minutes. He missed wide right in the fifth minute and again in the 11th minute.
The last remaining original MLS player from 1996, Corrales received a standing ovation from the crowd when he was introduced. A special ceremony, featuring a video tribute from players around the league, was held before kickoff.
Corrales received another standing ovation when he was subbed out of the game in the 71st minute, and Lenhart and Victor Bernandez punctuated the moment by carrying him off the field on their shoulders.
With the curtain closed on Hyndman's career at FC Dallas - which featured a trip to MLS Cup 2010, an MLS Coach of the Year award and the distinction of becoming the winningest coach in franchise history - the club will start the offseason with a search to fill the now-vacant manager position and look for a return to form in 2014.
