FRISCO- Honduras was eliminated from the 2018 World Cup after Australia scored a 3-1 victory securing the next-to-last spot in Russia.
The return of veteran Maynor Figueroa and Elis Quito added pace on the flanks and Honduras lifted its tempo in the first half, frustrating the Socceroos attack.
“Australia was very strong and aggresive and put pressure on us. The first half of the game was more balanced, the second half, the (first) goal took a toll," said Honduras manager Jorge Luis Pinto.
Australia’s first goal came in the 54th minute at Syndey’s Olympic stadium as Mile Jedinak took a free kick that curved to the left of the wall and deflected sharply in defender Henry Figueroa.
“Up until the first goal we had not done enough to get ahead, obviously what happened is what the world knows at this point," said defender Maynor Figueroa.
Maynor Figueroa has earned 146 caps with Honduras.
