FRISCO, Texas — For the second-straight match, and third overall, FC Dallas defender Reggie Cannon started for the United States in the 2019 Gold Cup. The US faced Mexico in the Gold Cup Final on Sunday, and the Americans fell 1-0 to El Tri.
The lone goal of the game wasn't scored until the 73rd minute after Mexico's Raul Jimenez played a slick, back-heel pass to Jonathan Dos Santos, who floated a shot into the top-left corner of the net. The United States had plenty of chances throughout the match, including one from Jozy Altidore early on, but the striker's shot was placed too far to the right of the goal.
Cannon himself had an excellent outing for the United States at the right back position. He had the task of marking Rodolfo Pizarro to start the game, and he did such a great job of limiting Mexico's opportunities in the first half that Mexico had to switch Pizzaro to the right wing in order to give him a better chance to thrive. He completed 23 passes Sunday night at a 92% accuracy.
Cannon will return to Dallas as the last player to conclude his time on international duty this summer. He made three starts and one substitute appearance for the US in the tournament.
