FRISCO, Texas (April 10, 2011) – The Houston Dynamo Reserves delivered the first loss of the season to the FC Dallas Reserves, 1-0, with a late goal at FC Dallas Stadium Tuesday night.
With both sides trading chances and defensive stops, Colin Rolfe and Cam Weaver finally broke the stalemate in the 83rd minute. Rolfe made a run down the middle, getting past the FC Dallas back line and drawing the attention of goalkeeper Chris Seitz before laying the ball off to Weaver on the flank, who slotted home the game’s only goal.
The Houston Dynamo began the match on the attack. The visitors controlled possession for a large portion of the opening 15 minutes of play. Despite the pressure, FC Dallas’ defense managed to keep the match scoreless. The best chance Houston had to go ahead early came in the 16th minute when Kofi Sarkodie controlled the ball on the right flank before firing a cross across the face of goal. The low pass made its way through a crowd of players in the goalmouth before falling to a late-arriving Alex Dixon at the back post. Unfortunately for Dixon, his first-touch attempt on goal went high over the crossbar.
FC Dallas gained a few minutes of possession near the 20th minute, but just like its South Texas rivals, the home side could not create any clear chances on goal. The Dynamo countered quickly in the 24th minute, when a ball popped out to Adam Moffat 10 yards outside the area. Without hesitation, Moffat lined a shot that hammered the right post behind Seitz before shooting back into play and being cleared by the FC Dallas defense.
FC Dallas had a good chance to end the half on a solid note in the 42nd minute, when Homegrown players Victor Ulloa and Moises Hernandez combined down the left flank. Racing to keep Ulloa’s pass from going over the end line, Hernandez hit a sliding centering pass intended for forward Ruben Luna, but a back-tracking Dynamo defender cut out the waist-high pass at the last second.
FC Dallas Reserves’ leading scorer Bryan Leyva looked to ignite his side in the 54th minute. The Homegrown midfielder collected a loose ball in midfield, ran at a defender and fired a long-range blast. Unfortunately for Leyva, the hard shot went directly at Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric, who controlled the ball easily.
FC Dallas fell to 2-1-0 (6 points) with the loss, while Houston improved to 3-0-0 (9 points). The FC Dallas Reserves take on Real Salt Lake Reserves in Utah on April 17 at 11 a.m. CT.
