STORY LINES
El Capitán
FC Dallas heads down south for the second leg of the Texas Derby which means the fate of El Capitán, a 19th century replica cannon, is on the line. The annual winner of the Texas Derby series earns the right to keep El Capitán at their home stadium for the next year. Last season, Dallas lost possession of El Capitán for the first time since 2018 after falling 3-2 in the final Derby of 2021 following draws in the first two editions. But Dallas has a great chance to reclaim the prize as the club defeated Houston 2-1 in the first leg at Toyota Stadium in April. If FCD wins or draws, El Capitán will return to Toyota Stadium but a loss would allow Houston to keep hold of it for a second consecutive year. More on the Texas Derby and El Capitán HERE.
Close It Out
Dallas has developed a worrying habit of surrendering leads late in games. Three times Dallas has taken the lead on the road but didn't come away with three points. The trend trickled into its home form recently as Dallas drew 1-1 with Inter Miami CF on July 4th despite leading the game for over an hour. All together, those late slip ups have led to seven dropped points on the year (Dallas would be tied for second in the West otherwise). The team will be desperate to make sure a similar scenario doesn't happen in Houston. Ironically, it was Houston who was on the wrong end of a late comeback when the teams faced off last time. Last April, Dallas trailed 1-0 heading into the 87th minute until substitutes Tsiki Ntsabeleng and Facundo Quignon struck six minutes apart to send Toyota Stadium into pandemonium. Saturday's derby game may come down to which team can hold its nerve best.
Tsiki Sauce
Rookie midfielder Tsiki Ntsabeleng continues to be the surprise of FCD's 2022 season. Dallas traded up to select the South African with the last pick in this year's SuperDraft and he's seized the opportunity with both hands, playing 501 MLS minutes thus far. It was Ntsabeleng who sparked the club's late comeback in the last Texas Derby and the 24-year-old has been in fine form heading into this weekend's rivalry matchup. Ntsabeleng and Homegrown Brandon Servania has been splitting time in midfield but Ntsabeleng has showed he can perform from the start and as a second-half super sub. Could Tsiki "The Sauce" Ntsabeleng have another inspired performance against Dallas' biggest rival? Tune in Saturday to find out.
