STORY LINES

Ferreira
Forward Jesús Ferreira is living up to expectations after signing a Designated Player contract this offseason and currently leads the MLS Golden Boot race with five goals. After being kept off the score sheet through the first three games, Ferreira exploded into life with five goals and one assist in his last two starts and looks certain to beat his previous season-high of eight goals, which he achieved in 2019 and 2021. The Homegrown will look to continue his hot streak against a Red Bulls team that's only kept one shutout through its first six matches.

  • Nico Estevéz: "I think Jesús is understanding the role he's in, when he has to drop and help the team in build and when to stay high to be in a good position to score. Also, his confidence and determination to score those goals. I think it's important that he keeps learning when to drop and when to stay high."

Paes
Why isn't anyone talking about Maarten Paes? Let's talk about Maarten Paes. The big Dutch goalkeeper joined FCD this offseason on loan from FC Utrecht and has been quietly excellent since earning the starting job. His contributions have largely gone under the radar (which is actually probably ideal for a goalkeeper) since Dallas' backline have done such a good job shielding him. Paes has faced a league-low of 14 shots and conceded just four goals—third-fewest in the league. He also has a very respectable save percentage, 78%, and is fourth overall in crosses stopped (7). Paes could have his hands full against the Red Bulls who are tied for second-most goals in the Eastern Conference (10).

  • Nico Estevéz: "Maarten is doing a great job and we can see in training how good he is at shot-stopping. He's helping us stop any chances that we concede in the game and he's very solid which gives confidence to the team."

Red Bulls
Dallas goes on the road for the third time this year still looking for a win after a loss and a draw on their previous travels. And they'll be playing an unfamiliar in opponent in the New York Red Bulls who FCD haven't faced since May of 2019. Coach Gerhard Struber has helped his team to a strong start and they reside in third place in the East with a 3-2-1 record.

  • Nico Estevéz: “I think Red Bulls is a team that's known to press and provoke the opponent into making mistakes followed by quick transitions. Now, they're trying to play out of the back a little bit more but usually they look for long balls and second balls to stress our backline. We'll have to be very aware of that situation and be compact in order to win those second balls."
