HOMEGROWN DERBY PART III

  • Wednesday’s game is the third and final meeting between FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake, two teams with similar philosophies. Both clubs believe in developing and playing Homegrown players. In 2019, the FCD and RSL set an MLS record when they played a combined 12 Homegrown players in one game (RSL played seven, FCD played five). Earlier this year, the clubs played to a 2-2 draw at Toyota Stadium and RSL defeated Dallas 3-2 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Sept. 4.

PROGRESSION

  • Dallas last match showed signs that the team is evolving under intern head coach Marco Ferruzzi. FCD entered halftime with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jesús Ferreira and Franco Jara but was unable to hold on after a Chicharito penalty and Sebastian Lletget goal meant Dallas had to settle for a point on the road. Still, it was a promising display with Dallas outshooting LA eight to six despite only seeing 41% possession—something Ferruzzi has stressed over his first few weeks in charge.

Midfielder Paxton Pomykal: "You can see it, especially in the last few games, we’re really starting to come together and learning what he (Ferruzzi) wants from us. That first half in LA, I felt that was a really complete performance for a first half. That’s the progression we wish we could’ve gone out and replicated in the second half. From an outside perspective, you can start to see some of the changes that we’ve been making."

FERREIRA

  • Homegrown Jesús Ferreira notched his seventh goal of the season against LA Galaxy with a curling effort from outside the box. With his eight assists so far, Ferreira has combined for 15 goal contributions this year and eclipsed his previous best of 14 set during his breakout 2019 season (8 goals, 6 assists). His record is even more impressive considering Ferreira missed the first seven games through injury. If the 20-year-old can continue his form against RSL on Wednesday, FCD has a good chance of ending its nine-game winless run.

Head coach Marco Ferruzzi: "Jesús has always been a technical player. His energy is outstanding this year, he’s doing work on both sides of the ball. He’s collecting assists as well as his goals. He’s always had fantastic technique and a knack for scoring. The focus and energy always continues to improve week by week for him.
