Story Lines

Home Opportunity: FC Dallas is back at Toyota Stadium looking for their first home win of the season. Uncharacteristically, the club has begun the year stronger on its travels than at home in Frisco. Dallas has recorded two wins and a draw from their opening three road games while losing both matches at home. It’s a far cry from the team that has typically been much more comfortable in familiar confines while struggling on the road (Dallas won exactly one away game last season). Still, it’s only a matter of time until head coach Eric Quill can find the right balance of playing on the front foot vs. counterattacking – the style of play has served his side so well away from Toyota Stadium. Now, the club has a great opportunity to earn its first victory in front of the home fans this Saturday against Sporting Kansas City, the bottom team in the Western Conference (1 point from five matches).

Formation: Last Saturday, Eric Quill strayed away from the 4-2-3-1 formation for the first time this season. Dallas’ first-year coach fielded a 4-3-1-2 look against Real Salt Lake last week in a bid to add more midfield cover behind forward players Petar Musa, Lucho Acosta and Léo Chú. The gamble paid off as FCD came away with all three points in a 1-0 win, albeit against a 10-man RSL side. Quill admitted postgame that he feels the new-look formation fits the profiles of his player better, especially when it comes to Acosta who had more attacking freedom and touches in the opponent’s final third. Considering the success of the 4-3-1-2, there’s a solid chance we see it once again this Saturday.

SKC: It hasn’t been a happy start to 2025 for Sporting Kansas City. Peter Vermes, SKC’s longtime head coach, has seen his side earn just one point from its opening five matches. With a rough end to 2024 as well, Kansas City hasn’t recorded a league win since mid-September of last season – making it a combined nine-game winless run. If FCD is going to add to SKC’s misery, Eric Quill’s side will need to keep a close eye on striker Dejan Joveljić who leads Kansas City with two goals on the season.
