WHAT WE LEARNED: Three Takeaways from FC Dallas' 2-1 Loss to Philadelphia

FRISCO - What started out as another strong road performance quickly turned to disappointment as FC Dallas gave up two goals late to come back empty handed from their trip to Pennsylvania. Let's dive into three things we learned along the way. 

SIX-SAVE JIMMY

In his first MLS start of the season, Jimmy Maurer was not the reason for FCD's late surrender of the lead. With six saves on the night, he was anything but. 

Maurer made six saves on Philadelphia's eight shots on target - twice as many as Dallas faced at any point this season. The six saves doubled any single-game save total to date as well and is tied for the third most saves in an MLS match in 2019. 

Two of his biggest came as the Union tried to level the match late: denying David Accam from point-blank range in the 57th minute and blocking Marco Fabian's PK attempt in the 85th minute before Cory Burke was able to tap home the equalizer off the ensuing rebound. 

Dallas has long known the strength it has in goal and Maurer proved yet again his worth as an MLS starter in Pennsylvania. 

ON THE HEELS

After taking the lead on a screamer from Reto Ziegler in the 10th minute, Dallas had moments where it struggled to find its footing in the opening half. In the second half, it was seemingly all Union as Dallas struggled to not only gain possession, but underwent an onslaught from the home side at goal.

FCD's 43.7 percent possession for the match was the first time all year it lost the battle for the ball and its 388 passes at a 78 percent success rate were, by far, lows for the season. 

It was the first time we've seen Luchi Gonzalez's side unable to assert its style over even small stretches of the match. Nearly half of the match (44 percent according to WhoScored) was spent in Dallas' own third - a number that was undoubtedly higher late in the game. 

"We suffered for 90 minutes and were unable to keep the ball. We cannot expect to defend for 90 minutes and expect to win," Ziegler said after the match. "We only had one shot on target in 90 minutes but we will fight back and do better next week for sure."

MR. UNDER THE RADAR

With another 74 minutes to his name, Michael Barrios took sole possession of second place for consecutive appearances by a field player with now 92 straight matches dating back to June 19, 2016.

From the 18-man roster in that 2-0 loss to Sporting KC in the midst of the magical 2016 double, just three other players remain with FCD: Matt Hedges, Jesse Gonzalez and Carlos Gruezo. Fabian Castillo, Chris Seitz, Walker Zimmerman and Atiba Harris were among the long-gone names who started that match. Dozens of players and staff members have come and gone in the 1,021 days since, but Barrios has played in every single MLS match.

The only other active player to come close is future first-ballot National Soccer Hall of Famer Chris Wondolowski, who came into the night just one game behind Barrios As an unused sub against Portland, the striker saw his streak come to a halt at 90. 

Barrios' 15 goals and 24 assists in that span aren't the most jump-off-the-page tallies, but as the speedy Colombian goes, FC Dallas goes. The club is 28-7-7 all-time when he registers a goal or an assist, 16-3-3 when he scores. When he's on, he's unstoppable. He's re-imagined his game from goal scorer when he first joined FCD to leading assist man in recent years and is the only player to appear in all 34 matches in either 2017 or 2018 - and he did it in both. The midfielder is already on pace to do it again, leading Dallas in minutes played in 2019. 

In a team that has undergone a nearly complete roster turnover in the last few years, Barrios has been steadily flying under the MLS radar. But his name will for the foreseeable future will remain among some of the league's legends in longevity.
