FRISCO, Texas – Next up on FCD Rewind is the Texas Derby: FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo from August 25, 2019. The match will be re-aired this Saturday, May 17 from 7-9PM on TXA 21 and will be available to stream on fcdallas.com/OnDemand beginning Monday, May 18.
Aside from being the Texas Derby, here are a few reasons why you should tune in for the game this Saturday.
Context
Matches between Dallas and Houston are nearly always hotly contested. Except this one. In the first leg of the Derby a few months prior, FCD had been denied a late equalizer with a highly controversial call in a 2-1 loss in Houston. This time, Luchi Gonzalez and co. weren’t going to leave it up to chance. Although Dallas was only one place above their main rival in the Western Conference at the time, the two teams looked worlds apart over the 90 minutes.
The Kobra Arrives
Marquee offseason signing Zdenek “Kobra” Ondrasek struggled to flourish over the first few months of his Major League Soccer career. He’d only started one game and didn’t open his scoring account until netting the first of FCD’s three-goal comeback away to Montreal the week before Houston came to town. Now with a debut goal under his belt, Luchi trusted Kobra’s hot hand and unleashed him from the get-go. Luchi’s faith was well placed and Kobra rose to the occasion with two goals in front of the home crowd. Is there a better way to endear yourself to the fans than with a brace against your local rival? Probably not.
Clinical
The match was a prime example of how important it is to take your chances. Although Dallas won this game by a four-goal margin, they only had one more shot than Houston over the 90 minutes (17 to 16). Dallas scored five goals from seven attempts on target while the Dynamo only made one shot count from four goal-bound attempts. Plus, the score could’ve been even more lopsided considering Jesús Ferreira's second goal of the night was ruled out for one of the harshest off-the-ball offside calls you'll ever see. Good thing it didn’t really matter, in the end.
