FRISCO, Texas – The next match in the FCD Rewind series is FC Dallas' final game of the 2019 season which saw Sporting Kansas City travel to Toyota Stadium on Oct. 6. The match will be rebroadcasted this Sunday, May 31 from 7-9PM on TXA 21. If you miss the broadcast, the match will be available beginning at 8AM Monday on fcdallas.com/OnDemand.
Here are a few reasons you should tune in to TXA 21 this Sunday at 7 for FC Dallas vs. Sporting KC from Oct. 6, 2019.
Some Context
Win and you’re in. That was FC Dallas’ mantra heading into the last game of the regular season against Sporting KC as three points on Decision Day would guarantee postseason qualification for the fifth time in six seasons. While FCD’s task may sound straightforward, Sporting had proven a tough opponent for Dallas over the years; and anything less than a victory would open the door for San Jose Earthquakes to steal the final playoff spot in the West. Kansas City was already eliminated from playoff contention, but nothing would’ve delighted them more than to spoil the party and sink Dallas’ playoff hopes along with them. It was do or die for Luchi Gonzalez’s men.
Kobra Steps Up
Zdenek “Kobra” Ondrasek had erupted over the latter half of 2019 with five goals in his last six appearances heading into Decision Day. Despite the pressure of the big occasion, Kobra maintained his fine form and opened the scoring with an uncharacteristic breakaway goal just 9 minutes into the game. But he wasn’t done. The Czech ace added another in the 68th minute to bring his season tally to six goals—five of which came at home in Toyota Stadium.
Big Scores are Back
With six goals on the day, this game was FCD’s best offensive showing of the entire season. But the Toyota Stadium faithful had been treated to a few high-scoring matches in recent weeks. In August, Dallas enjoyed a barnstorming 5-3 win over Minnesota United and followed it up with a 5-1 victory in the Texas Derby two weeks later. Before the month was out, Dallas toppled newcomers FC Cincinnati 3-1 with goals from Michael Barrios, Ryan Hollingshead and Kobra. While it was tough to outdo those August performances, FC Dallas managed to do it on the final day despite the pressure of playoff qualification looming over their heads.
