FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas Homegrown forward Jesús Ferreira scored in the 81st minute to help the United States earn a 1-1 draw in a friendly against Mexico Wednesday night at State Farm Stadium.
Ferreira started the match while fellow FCD Homegrown Paxton Pomykal featured as a late-game substitute. Winger Uriel Antuna gave Mexico the lead in the 55th minute after capitalizing on a giveaway near midfield and going through on goal where he beat USA goalkeeper Sean Johnson at his near post. Mexico held the 1-0 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game before the USMNT rallied via a counter attack when Alan Soñora played Jordan Morris into space down the right wing and the Seattle Sounders forward crossed for Ferreira to tap home from close range.
"We knew that we could get them on the counter, we have speed up top," Ferreira said in a postgame interview. "So, when I saw Jordan (Morris) down the line I knew that I just had to go into the box as a #9. I knew that anything can happen in the box so I just followed the play and it went in."
It was Ferreira's 8th international goal and earned the 22-year-old Man of the Match honors. Ferreira and Pomykal will rejoin FC Dallas ahead of the club's match against New York City FC at Citi Field on Saturday.
