FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas forward Jesús Ferreira equaled a USMNT record for most goals in a single Gold Cup with his seventh of the tournament in an eventual loss to Panama in Wednesday's semifinal.
Ferreira equalized for the United States in the 105th minute of extra time to tie Texas native Clint Dempsey's record of seven total goals achieved in the 2015 Gold Cup. The USMNT eventually lost 5-4 in the penalty shootout to send Panama to the final at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, July 16.
Unlike in the quarterfinal against Canada, Ferreira didn't convert his attempt in the penalty shootout with Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera making the save.
Despite the disappointing semifinal result, Ferreira enjoyed a standout Gold Cup campaign where he remains the tournament's top scorer. The 22-year-old set another USMNT record during the Group Stage by scoring back-to-back hat tricks for the first time, tying Landon Donovan's career USMNT hat trick record in the process (3). Ferreira returns to FC Dallas with 15 career international goals in 23 caps for the U.S, having become the fastest player in program history to reach double digit goals.
