STORY LINES

  • Leagues Cup: FC Dallas continues its Leagues Cup campaign with another Group Stage match against Necaxa of Aguascalientes, Mexico. If you're still a little confused about what the Leagues Cup is and how it works, here's a refresher:
    • The new-look 2023 Leagues Cup includes all 47 teams in MLS and Mexico's Liga MX in a World Cup-style tournament. It begins with a three-team group stage to see who moves on to the knockout rounds. FC Dallas faced fellow MLS side Charlotte FC on Friday, June 21 and played to a 2-2 draw before falling 4-1 in the extra point shootout.
    • It's Important to keep in mind that there are no ties in the Leagues Cup. If a game is tied in the Group Stage after 90 minutes, both teams earn 1 point as they normally would but then compete in a penalty shootout for an additional point. Wins still count for the usual 3 points. So, FC Dallas earned 1 point from Friday's game while Charlotte FC earned 2.
    • At the end of the Group Stage, the team that finishes bottom will be eliminated while the top two teams will move on to the Round of 32 knockouts.
  • Must-Not-Lose: Tuesday's match isn't necessarily a must-win but it's definitely a must-not-lose. As it stands, Charlotte FC is in first place in the group with 2 points while Dallas is in second with 1 (Necaxa hasn't played yet). If Dallas defeats Necaxa, the club would automatically advance with 4 points, regardless of the result between Charlotte and Necaxa later this week. The only other result that would keep Dallas' hopes alive would be a draw followed by a win in the extra point shootout. That would leave Dallas on 3 points and, if Charlotte defeated Necaxa, Dallas would advance as the second-place team. A loss would see the club eliminated from the Leagues Cup.
  • Against Necaxa: Surprisingly, this is not the first meeting between Dallas and Necaxa. The year was 1998 and it was the Concacaf Cup Winners Cup, precursor to the Concacaf Champions Cup. The club was still known as the Dallas Burn and they entered the Cup Winners Cup after winning the 1997 U.S. Open Cup. But the Burn's campaign was cut short with a 4-1 defeat to Necaxa at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Now, FC Dallas will look to avenge that defeat 25 years later against a Necaxa team that sits 14th in the Apertura standings. They're only three games into the new campaign but Necaxa are winless (0-2-1) to begin the season.
