STORY LINES

  • How We Got Here: FC Dallas advanced to the last 16 of the 2023 Leagues Cup after a dramatic 2-1 win over Liga MX's Mazatlán FC on Wednesday night. Dallas entered the first knockout round after finishing second behind Charlotte FC during the Group Stage. On the other side, Miami enters the Round of 16 after a 3-1 Lionel Messi-propelled victory against in-state rivals Orlando City SC. Tata Martino's team has been red-hot in the Leagues Cup so far, winning three out of three games while scoring nine goals total. The winner of Sunday's match move on to the quarterfinals and face the winner of Houston Dynamo vs. Charlotte FC.
  • New Additions: Dallas' attack has reaped the benefits of new signing Eugene Ansah recently. The Ghanian forward has two goals over the last two games since joining from the Israeli Premier League earlier this summer. Exclusively used as a super sub so far, Ansah's penchant for scoring crucial goals (he notched the winner in the Round of 32) could earn him a place in the starting lineup sooner rather than later. While we're on the topic of new signings, you may have seen that Dallas just added veteran midfielder Asier Illararmendi. The former Real Madrid and Real Socieded midfielder joined as a free agent and promises to be one of the most exciting signings in recent FCD history. Still, don't expect "Illara" to feature as soon as Sunday's Round of 16 matchup with Miami. Head coach Nico Estévez is typically slow to integrate new signings into his lineup so it could be a few weeks until the 33-year-old debuts. Don't fear, Illara's time will come.
  • Messi's Miami: This Inter Miami isn't the same team FC Dallas defeated 1-0 back in April. On and off the field, the club has been transformed by the arrival of the world's greatest player: Lionel Messi. The previous Inter Miami is the team that has the fewest points in MLS (18 from 22 games). The current Inter Miami has won three out of three Leagues Cup games with Messi scoring in every match. We know Messi's greatness, it's been apparent for two decades. But it's not just him. Fellow ex-Barcelona star Sergio Busquets has reinvigorated Miami's midfield while MLS veteran Josef Martínez looks reborn under Tata Martino's new regime. Besides those star names, there's also wingback Robert Taylor to worry about. The Finland native has three goals and two assists in three Leagues Cup outings. The point is, FC Dallas' defense will have a lot to handle with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
