STORY LINES

  • How We Got Here: The knockout stage of the 2023 Leagues Cup is here and FC Dallas is hosting Mazatlán for a chance to reach the last 16. Dallas advanced to the Round of 32 after finishing second in Group South 4 thanks to a draw against Charlotte FC followed by a 3-0 win over Club Necaxa. Mazatlán, on the other side, topped Group South 1 after an impressive 3-1 win over Austin FC and a penalty shootout win against FC Juarez. And remember, the winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner of Inter Miami vs. Orlando City. Regardless, if Dallas wins, they'd host that Round of 16 match. What I'm saying is, we're just two results away from Lionel Messi playing soccer in Frisco, Texas. Go figure.
  • Big Returns: FC Dallas welcomed back two important figures last time out: Paul Arriola and Paxton Pomykal both returned to action after long injury layoffs. It had been a long time coming for Arriola, in particular, having missed 12 games with a muscle injury sustained back in May. Their returns mark the end of an unprecedented injury crises that saw Dallas missing 7+ starters at its peak. But, that crises had a silver lining. The recent emergence of Bernard Kamungo, Sam Junqua, Eugene Ansah and others probably wouldn't have happened if FCD was at full strength all summer. And now that the injury report is back to normal, there's increased competition for places across the whole field.
  • Mazatlán: Wednesday's opponent is Mazatlán FC of Liga MX. Only founded in 2020, the club is based in Sinaloa in northwest Mexico and plays at the newly-constructed Estadio de Mazatlán. Mazatlán finished in last place in the 2023 Clausura with just two wins from 17 games. Now under head coach Ismael Rescalvo, the club is looking for a better Apertura season and have begun with two draws and one loss. While its domestic form doesn't leap off the page, Mazatlán had an excellent Leagues Cup group stage, defeating hosts Austin FC 3-1 before earning a 1-1 draw with FC Juarez (followed by a 4-2 win in the shootout).
