MONTREAL, Quebec – FC Dallas went down a goal to the Montreal Impact on the road, but battled back to earn a 2-1 victory tonight at Stade Saputo.
FC Dallas nearly struck first in the 14th minute when Michael Barrios used a tricky inside-of-the-foot touch to flick a pass onto Maxi Urruti at the top of the box. Urruti sent a pass to Roland Lamah, who slipped a pass to Ryan Hollingshead. The left back found enough space to get off a shot that skipped just wide of the post to Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush’s left side.
FC Dallas looked to have taken a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Hollingshead and Lamah combined again down the left flank. Hollingshead took the one-two pass into the area and had his shot blocked by Bush, but Cristian Colman followed up and got off a shot that crossed the line, before it was headed out of goal by Montreal defender Daniel Lovitz. Referee Robert Sibiga was unable to verify the ball had crossed the line although video replay, which will be implemented by Major League Soccer beginning Aug. 5, clearly showed the ball had crossed the goal line.
Two minutes later, Montreal gained a 1-0 advantage when Michael Salazar got his head on a cross played into the area by Matteo Mancosu. Salazar was able to rise above his marker and head a looping shot to the back post over FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
FC Dallas fought its way back into the match just after halftime when Lamah kept the ball in Montreal’s defensive third of the pitch following a corner kick. Lamah played a one-two pass with Atiba Harris before sending the ball out wide to Urruti. The Argentine had found some space to pick up his head and he delivered a perfect pass to the back post for Colman to finish off. The Paraguayan’s first MLS goal tied the match, 1-1, in the 52nd minute.
Colman gave FCD a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute after Carlos Gruezo lofted a ball over the top of the Montreal defense. With a defender on his back, Colman brought down the ball perfectly with his chest, avoided a challenge from Bush, and fired a shot past the last Impact defender.
Montreal earned a set piece in a dangerous position in the 89th minute. Blerim Dzemaili stepped up to take the free kick from the top of the area and fired an laser towards the post to Seitz’s right side but the goalkeeper got down an punched away the knuckling shot to preserve the victory for FC Dallas.
