Story Lines
Quill Returns Home: It's been a bright start to life under Eric Quill for FC Dallas. The club began the season with two road games and emerged with 4 points after a 2-1 win against rivals Houston Dynamo and a dramatic 3-3 draw against Colorado Rapids. Having impressed on their travels, Quill and co. have their first opportunity to wow the FC Dallas supporters in person on Saturday's Home Opener. It's actually Quill's second Toyota Stadium Home Opener. As head coach of North Texas SC back in 2019, Quill led the newly-founded club to a 3-2 win in their inaugural match (featuring a hat trick from 16-year-old Ricardo Pepi). Considering the promising performances in the previous two games, there's a good chance Quill pulls out another landmark result on his second Toyota Stadium debut.
Musa Magic: No player has played a bigger role in FCD's strong start than forward Petar Musa. The Croatian recorded a goal and an assist in both opening games, bringing him one shy of the MLS record for games with a goal and assist to start a new season (held by Ante Razov since 1999). Plus, considering his involvement in Pedrinho's goal in Colorado (the only one Musa didn't directly score or assist), it's fair to say Musa has been the key attacking piece under Eric Quill. But that's not to diminish the contributions of newcomer Lucho Acosta. The former MLS MVP scored his first FC Dallas goal (assisted by Musa) with a filthy chip over Colorado's Zack Steffen. As Acosta and Musa gain chemistry with each passing game, the duo looks ready to put the league on notice.
The Brimstone Cup: Saturday's game reignites an old rivalry: The Brimstone Cup. The rivalry between Dallas and Chicago began in the late 1990s when the clubs faced off in crucial knockout games in back-to-back seasons (the 1998 Open Cup and 1999 MLS Cup Playoffs). To commemorate the budding rivalry, fans groups from both clubs commissioned the creation of a trophy, the Brimstone Cup--named as a nod to the fiery names of both teams: Chicago Fire and Dallas Burn (FCD's original name). Back then, the clubs faced off at least twice a season but as the league grww and conferences shifted, the Brimstone Cup has been contested evermore infrequently. Dallas and Chicago have only faced off once in the last four seasons (a scoreless draw at Soldier Field in 2022), so FCD and their fans will be chomping at the bit to win the Brimstone Cup back for the first time since 2018.
