Story Lines
The Perfect Start: FC Dallas kicked off the 2025 season in stunning fashion last Saturday. In head coach Eric Quill's first game in charge, Dallas earned a 2-1 comeback victory over rivals Houston Dynamo in what was the club's first win in Houston since 2016. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, FCD fought back and tied the game through Petar Musa who capitalized on a giveaway along Houston's backline. Musa was also instrumental in the winning goal with 15 minutes remaining. The Croatian won possession in his own half before finding Anderson Julio with a long ball behind Houston's backline. Julio outran his two defenders and rounded the goalkeeper before finishing into the empty net to hand FCD all three points with his first goal in Burn colors. While it wasn't a mistake-free performance, earning three points on the road against a rival was close to the perfect for the Eric Quill era.
Debutants: Six players made their FC Dallas debuts last Saturday: forward Anderson Julio, midfielders Lucho Acosta, Ramiro and Pedrinho, as well as defenders Shaq Moore and Osaze Urhoghide. All six made their mark on the game and helped Dallas earn three points. Julio was the standout with his game-winning goal while leading Dallas with three shots (two on target). Acosta, the 2023 MLS MVP, played 79 minutes on his Dallas debut and created two chances and made six passes into Houston's final third. Behind him, Ramiro started as FCD's defensive midfielder and made eight ball recoveries, three interceptions and completed 2/2 accurate long balls. Pedrinho entered the game in the 62nd minute before completing six of eight passes and winning one aerial duel. Defensively, Moore and Urhoghide limited Houston to one goal and just three shots on target over the 90 minutes. Moore also had 91% passing accuracy while making two recoveries, five clearances and won 3/3 tackles. Urhoghide only trained three time with Dallas prior to the game (while awaiting his visa) but was a standout along the backline. The 24-year-old won 5/8 ground duels, had three clearances and three headed clearances, made five ball recoveries all while completing 52 of his 58 passing attempts. Barring any major changes from Eric Quill, expect all six new faces to be major contributors in Colorado on Saturday.
The Rapids: The Colorado Rapids enter their second season under head coach Chris Armas. Last season, the finished seventh in the Western Conference while placing third in the Leagues Cup (earning them a place in this year's Concacaf Champions Cup). Like Dallas, Colorado hit the road to open the season and earned a scoreless draw against St. Louis CITY SC despite facing 18 shots over the 90 minutes. But the Rapids can be forgiven for a slow showing in the opener since they're attention has been focused largely on the Concacaf Champions Cup. Colorado were matched up against LAFC and registered a 2-1 win in the first leg at home last week before falling 1-0 in Los Angeles Tuesday night. The defeat eliminated the Rapids due to the away goals rule. Now, the question is whether the Rapids' efforts in continental competition will help or hurt their chances on Saturday. On the one hand, they have three fewer days of rest than Dallas. On the other hand, it's so early in the season that the extra two games under their belt means they should be in better rhythm than Eric Quill's team. So, Saturday night could be a tale of energy vs. game rhythm to see which comes out on top.
