Story Lines
Defensive Identity: It appears FC Dallas may have rediscovered their defensive identity in 2024. After conceding 10 goals over the first five games, Dallas has recorded back-to-back shutouts thanks two scoreless draws; one on the road against St. Louis and one at home against Seattle. While they weren't overly inspiring results, they're a sign that FCD is back to being the defensively solid side that we've come to know under Nico Estévez. Dallas will look to make it three shutouts in a row against a Colorado team that's scored 13 goals so far this year, fifth most in the conference.
Offensive Slump: While FC Dallas is getting back into the swing of things on the defensive side, it hasn't translated on the offensive end quite yet. Dallas has scored six goals so far in 2024, fewest in the Western Conference and second fewest in MLS. It's not entirely unexpected, though. The top scorer of the last two seasons, Jesús Ferreira, injured for most of the campaign and, even with a healthy Ferreira, Dallas has been a low shot volume/low scoring team over the last two seasons. That trend has reached a new low this year, though, and the coaching staff knows they need to find a way to be more dangerous in the final third, with or without Ferreira.
The Rapids: It's a new era for the Colorado Rapids. After a difficult 2023 campaign, the Rapids appointed MLS veteran Chris Armas to lead the club ahead of 2024. So far, it seems to be working. With an offseason of player acquisitions (including USMNTers Djordje Mihailovic and Zack Steffen), the Rapids have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign and reside in fifth place in the West. They're also in fine form having gained seven points from a possible nine in their last three outings. Considering that form and the fact FCD hasn't won in Colorado since 2014, it could be a difficult outing for Nico Estévez's team.
