STORY LINES

  • Fourth of July: The annual Fourth of July FC Dallas game is always a good time. For one, there's a huge fireworks show after the match. And it's a BIG show. You'll definitely want to stick around in your seat to witness just how enormous it really us. Plus, on the soccer side, FC Dallas typically plays well on the Fourth of July. The club has an all-time record of 10-4-5 on July 4 and hasn't lost on the holiday since 2006. Coincidentally, that loss was to Tuesday's opponent, D.C. United. But don't get superstitious. Dallas' last win on Independence Day was in 2019 against - you guessed it - D.C. United, back when Wayne Rooney was a player on the team and not its head coach.
  • Win Column: FC Dallas is back in the win column after recording a crucial 2-0 victory over the reigning champs, LAFC. Wins are always good but this one was special: It ended a six-game winless run and was the club's first victory since leading scorer Jesús Ferreira departed for the Gold Cup with the U.S. Men's National Team. In his absence, it was forward Bernard Kamungo and defender/utility man Sam Junqua who carried the goal-scoring burden. Kamungo notched his second goal of the year before Junqua (who was playing out of position at right wing) doubled the lead with an incredible run and finish into the top corner. Ferreira likely won't be back until after the game against Seattle Sounders on June 15, so Junqua and Kamungo may be called upon again.
  • D.C. United: Wayne Rooney's D.C. United is FCD's fourth Eastern Conference opponent of the season. The club sits in ninth place and has two wins in its last five matches, including an impressive 3-0 victory over Supporters' Shield leaders FC Cincinnati. Their biggest story, though, is the absence of Designated Player Christian Benteke for yellow card accumulation. Not only is he D.C.'s leading scorer with 8 goals, he's also crucial to Rooney's style of play. Not other forward on the roster has Benteke's elite hold-up play ability or aerial prowess. That could force Rooney to forego his typical 5-back formation and try to play more through the middle by adding an extra midfielder, but we'll have to wait and see.
