Story Lines
El Capitán: FC Dallas is one win away from claiming the 2024 Texas Derby, the all-important regular season rivalry series between Dallas and the Houston Dynamo. The winner of the two-game series earns the right to keep El Capitán (a 19th century replica cannon) at their stadium for the next year. Dallas has the advantage going into the second leg having won the first contest 2-0 when Houston travelled to Toyota Stadium on April 27. As long as FCD doesn't lose by more than two goals this Saturday, they'll keep El Capitán in Frisco for the third-consecutive season. It would also mean that El Capitán would call Toyota Stadium home for the sixth time in the last seven years, the most dominant stretch in Texas Derby history.
Copa Tejas: FC Dallas is preparing for its fourth Copa Tejas match of the season. Copa Tejas is the fan-driven, regular season competition between Dallas, Austin and Houston and it's decided by whichever team earns the highest point per game (PPG) in matches against one another (three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss). Dallas is currently in second place with 2.0 PPG (two wins and one loss), trailing Austin FC with 2.25 PPG (three wins and one loss). Houston is in last place with 0 PPG having lost twice to Austin and once to Dallas. If Dallas is able to win in Houston this Saturday, they'll join Austin FC atop the Copa Tejas standings for the time being.
Busy, Busy Houston: Dallas visits Houston in the midst of a busy period for the hosts. Since the start of May, the Dynamo have already played four matches - including an Open Cup loss against Detroit City FC that went to extra time and penalties. That's a lot of minutes on the legs, especially considering Houston played Austin on Wednesday night. In comparison, FCD has only played three times in May (and none of those went to extra time) and have had a week of recovery since defeating Austin last Saturday. It's never easy playing away from home, but Dallas could have a slight advantage in terms of fitness levels.
