STORY LINES
Three in a Row?
FC Dallas heads to New York after earning back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Recent wins over Inter Miami and Real Salt Lake means Nico Estévez is on the brink of his first three-game winning streak of his FCD coaching career. The last time Dallas earned three wins on the bounce was under Luchi Gonzalez's stewardship back in the truncated 2020 season. It's a bit surprising FCD never rattled off three in a row at any point during the last campaign in which Estévez led the club to third in the West on the back of a 20-point improvement from 2021. But it's true. And it's a milestone the Spaniard has his eyes on. Standing in the way is New York City FC, Dallas' second Eastern Conference opponent of the season.
Jesus to Jesús
Dallas has a new dynamic duo in Geovane Jesus and Jesús Ferreira. Ferreira is a known quantity in MLS. Jesus, on the other hand, is only just now beginning to show his considerable talent since joining FCD from Cruzeiro in Brazil. The 21-year-old has recorded assists in each of his last two matches with similar driving runs forward followed by crosses crosses for Ferreira. His dynamism and connection with Ferreira has added a new dimension to FCD's attack. The Jesus + Jesús could prove vital once more this Saturday, facing a NYCFC team that's undefeated at home.
Fighting History
Not only is FCD looking for its first three-game win streak of the Estévez era, it's also seeking its first-ever away victory against New York City FC. Dallas hasn't won on the road against NYCFC in three attempts (0-1-2) and its only win (home or away) in the series was back in 2015 during NYC's inaugural season. So, Dallas is trying to buck a trend in the Big Apple this weekend. One thing that may help tip the balances in FCD's favor is a scheduling conflict: The Yankees play the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon so Yankee Stadium is unavailable for NYCFC. Instead, the game will be played a Citi Field...a different baseball stadium. To familiarize themselves ahead of the game, FC Dallas is training on a shortened field to mimic the smaller dimensions of Citi Field compared to Toyota Stadium. Perhaps FCD's unique preparations or NYCFC's lack of familiarity with Citi Field could help Dallas turn the tide on the series record.
