Story Lines

Must Win: FC Dallas heads to the West Coast needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Unfortunately, that might not even be enough. After Saturday's home defeat, Dallas is in a precarious position and will need to win the final three games of the season while hoping both the Portland Timbers and Minnesota United drop significant points in their remaining games. The official word is, FCD will be eliminated from playoff contention with either a draw or a loss against San Jose OR Minnesota United FC WIN at Real Salt Lake AND Portland Timbers WIN vs. Austin FC. All Dallas can do is take care of business at PayPal Park and hope RSL and Austin FC do them a favor. Fingers crossed, everyone.

Captain's Goal: Dallas captain Paul Arriola notched his fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot in Saturday's defeat to Orlando City. Arriola has been utilized all over the field this season, playing at right back, left wingback and on both wings depending on where the team has needed him. The constant chopping and changing slowed his production in front of goal over the first half of the year but Arriola has since found his footing and contributed four goals and one assist in his last seven games. With Dallas' backs against the wall for the rest of the regular season, they'll need Arriola to continue this vein of form to stand any chance of making a Cinderella run into the postseason. He's have a decent chance of adding to his goal record against a San Jose defense that's conceded 72 goals, nine more than any other team.

The 'Quakes: Let's be honest, it's been a dismal season for San Jose. The Earthquakes are dead last in MLS's overall rankings with 18 points and 5-23-3 record. In doing so, they recently clinched the Wooden Spoon, MLS's ignominious award for the worst record in the regular season. Dallas already account for one of those 23 defeats from when the team's faced off in the opening game of 2024 back in February: Dante Sealy delivered a 94th-minute winner to hand Dallas a 2-1 lead at Toyota Stadium. On the other hand, Dallas has won just once at San Jose's PayPal Park and that was back in 2016.
