STORY LINES
- Make or Break: Saturday's match is make or break for FC Dallas. The club sits in ninth place, the final playoff spot, with just three games remaining. Right above them is San Jose with one more point and one more game played. Whichever team comes out on top Saturday will have a huge advantage come Decision Day on October 21. With three teams (Austin, Kansas City and Minnesota) just three points behind, Dallas will be desperate to capitalize on its extra game in hand to give itself a six-point cushion in the playoff race. And while it's a long shot, Dallas can clinch the postseason with a win IF Kansas City loses or draws against Real Salt Lake AND Minnesota United draws LA Galaxy.
- Luchi's Return: There will be a familiar face on the opposing sideline this weekend. Former FC Dallas head coach Luchi Gonzalez is now the head honcho in San Jose and will lead his Earthquakes team into Toyota Stadium for the first time. Luchi was part of the FCD organization for nearly a decade, initially with the club's Academy before taking over the first team in 2019. Although he has plenty of love for his former club, you'd imagine Luchi would love to earn a victory in his former home stadium. It's up to FCD's current coach Nico Estévez to make sure that doesn't happen.
- Unbeaten Streak: Let's start with the good news: FC Dallas is currently on a six-game unbeaten run, its longest of the 2023 campaign. The bad news? Five of those six games were ties. The silver lining? Ties against in-conference opponents at this point in the season is, in a way, worth more than the usual one point since you're denying the opposition the chance at three points, which could affect your ultimate playoff position. That's a lot of words to say that FCD's unbeaten September wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. Still, head coach Nico Estévez knows that turning those draws into wins will be crucial with just three games remaining.
