Story Lines

Head Coach Luccin: In case you didn't hear, FC Dallas said goodbye to head coach Nico Estévez this week after 2.5 years in charge. In his place, the club hired assistant coach Peter Luccin (pronounced Luke-sain) on an interim basis for the rest of the 2024 season. Luccin originally joined FCD in 2013 towards the end of his playing career (which included previous stops at Marseille, PSG and Atlético Madrid). After hanging up his cleats, Luccin coached in the FC Dallas Academy for four years before joining the first team coaching staff as an assistant under Luchi Gonzalez. All in all, Luccin has been with the organization for 11 years and knows the club top to bottom. Now, he has the opportunity to be the head honcho and lead the club from the touchline.

Tactical Look: Considering this is Peter Luccin's first head coaching job, his tactical approach is still very much up in the air. FC Dallas has mostly played a 3-4-3 formation this season but results haven't followed. It's possible that Luccin reverts back to the 4-3-3 that Dallas played for many seasons before 2024. But, is there enough time? Luccin only took over coaching duties on Monday so, by Saturday, he'll have had just five training sessions with the team. That's not a lot of time to change a team's entire defensive system. Still, considering the squad played 4-3-3 all last season, it's possible they could switch back in time for Saturday.

STL: St. Louis haven't been able to reproduce that magic that saw them finish atop the Western Conference in their debut MLS season last year. The club currently sits in 11th place in the West with a 3-4-9 record and is winless on its travels this year (0-2-5). Dallas played CITY to 0-0 draw in St. Louis earlier this season, thanks to stellar performances from both Maarten Paes and Roman Bürki in goal. Last season, FCD defeated St. Louis 2-0 at Toyota Stadium in one of the stranger games of the campaign: The game was tied 0-0 in the 50th minute when inclement weather forced the remainder of the match to be postponed. A month later, the clubs resumed the game and Dallas was able to score two goals in the remaining 40 minutes. Dallas and interim head coach Peter Luccin would love a repeat of that result, albeit without needing to wait an extra month for the three points.
