FRISCO — FC Dallas is tied for first place in the Western Conference for the first time this season following a win over the Montreal Impact.
FCD entered the weekend tied for second place in the west, and it took care of business at home with a 2-0 victory over Montreal. An own goal and a Mauro Diaz penalty kick within the first 20 minutes of the match was enough for Dallas to secure all three points and put pressure on Sporting Kansas City for first place.
Dallas entered the weekend two points behind Sporting KC and needed either a draw or loss from the Midwest foe to secure a place at the top of the standings.
Sporting traveled to the northwest coast last Friday to take on the Portland Timbers in a Western Conference matchup. A back-and-forth game saw the two sides share the spoils with both coming away with one point.
Ironically, the battle for best in the west between FCD and Sporting will take place this Saturday in Kansas City, but the result won’t have an effect on the race to the top of the standings. The two sides will play in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matchup with the winner securing a spot in the Cup quarterfinals.
Other clubs around Major League Soccer will resume league play this week. Third-placed Los Angeles FC will look to back up its stoppage-time winner at San Jose with another win at home against Columbus Crew SC on June 23.
Right behind LAFC in the standings are the Vancouver Whitecaps, who are coming off a 5-2 home victory against Orlando City SC. The Whitecaps will also play on the 23rd in their next MLS matchup on the road against the Philadelphia Union.
Rounding out the top five in the Western Conference is Real Salt Lake. RSL fell to the LA Galaxy last Saturday behind a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace and will look to get back on track against San Jose on June 23.
