FRISCO - Over the weekend, FC Dallas came away home with a 0-0 draw against defending MLS Cup champions, Seattle Sounders FC, and while the team’s performance was an improvement, it was not enough to avoid Real Salt Lake and San Jose Earthquakes bumping them down to an 8th place standing in the Western Conference after Week 28.
Week 28 brought a number of changes to the top of the league table, with Vancouver sliding into first place after playing a mid-week match beating Minnesota 3-0 on Wednesday, while leaving Columbus with a 2-2 draw in the weekend jumping ahead of Portland who failed to maintain first position after losing away to Salt Lake 2-1.
RSL’s victory pushed them ahead of FC Dallas in goal difference, but other results that night played into Salt Lake’s favor, as they were able to finish the week in a playoff spot. San Jose Earthquakes took a result over the Houston Dynamo, jumping into a playoff spot of their own and leaving both Texas teams on the outside looking in.
As the table stands, fifth and sixth position will continue to be sought out fiercely as 8th place (Dallas), 7th place (Houston), and 6th place, (Salt Lake City) have all 38 points, with San Jose having one point more, but also one extra game played. As the regular season’s finish line is in sight, the fight for playoffs will have the teams scrambling the standings with just one month of the regular season to go.
