Toyota Stadium set to host championship match as Dallas side looks for first trophy since 1997
FRISCO, Texas (Friday, Aug. 19) – FC Dallas will host the New England Revolution in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 9 p.m., U.S. Soccer determined today. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and Univision Deportes Network for the second-straight year.
The match will be free for FC Dallas season ticket members, who reserve their seats through membership services, while all remaining seats in the stadium are $19.97 each[CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS]. The special price point pays homage to FC Dallas’ last U.S. Open Cup win in 1997 when the then-Dallas Burn topped D.C. united 5-3 in penalties (0-0 in regulation) on Oct. 29 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. The winner of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will earn a $250,000 bonus for players and a berth in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions League, as well as the club’s name permanently engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy at U.S. Soccer House in Chicago. The runner-up will earn $60,000.
Dating back to 1914, the 102-year-old Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in U.S. soccer and among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the single-elimination tournament begins each year with 91 professional and amateur teams (Major League Soccer, North American Soccer League, United Soccer League, Premier Development League, National Premier Soccer League, United States Adult Soccer Association and U.S. Club Soccer). As the top tier of professional soccer in the United States, MLS clubs have an automatic bye until the fourth round of the tournament.
The Sept. 13 final is a re-match of the 2007 Open Cup final when FC Dallas hosted New England on Oct. 3. New England won that title, 3-2. Dallas also lost the 2005 final to L.A.
FC Dallas has been top of the Major League Soccer table since July 4, currently sitting three points clear of second place with 45 points through 25 matches and an 18-match home unbeaten streak.
