What They're Saying: News and Notes From Week 8

While never off the radar, FC Dallas certainly flew pretty close to the edge the first few games of the season. But with two straight shutouts and two victories, Oscar Pareja’s men are getting some media love.

Here’s the latest media roundup featuring FC Dallas in the news.

Mosquera Brings It

Big D Soccer’s Jason Poon dives into what Santiago Mosquera did for FC Dallas in the club’s 2-0 win over Philadelphia. There’s also great insight on Jacori Hayes’ effectiveness.

“It’s just one game, against a struggling Union team, but it highlighted his potential and what’s to come from the promising Young DP,” writes Poon.

Is this 4-4-2 FC Dallas has used the last two matches - two victories, remember - the way forward for Oscar Pareja? I would argue that the FC Dallas head coach will continue to experiment with formations throughout the season based on personnel.

Arman Kafai writes for Pro Soccer USA that the recent lineup changes have been the key factors for FC Dallas two-match win streak.

"Starting off in the 4-4-2 allowed for coach Óscar Pareja to make changes when needed and he did so, bringing on Diaz and Maxi Urruti to bring a spark to the team."

Jimmy Maurer’s MLS Journey

FC Dallas goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer made his first MLS start this year and has taken advantage of the opportunity, leading MLS with a .50 Goals Against Average. It’s not all him, of course. Maurer is a true journeyman whose story will resonate with anyone who believes in the power of perseverance. This is a compelling read from Charles Boehm.

“It’s all made Maurer more appreciative than most of the baseline of infrastructure and opportunity on offer in MLS. With Gonzalez returning from a knee injury, his starting spot is far from secure. He’s enjoying his new chapter and is quietly optimistic about the possibilities for a Dallas squad that’s looked both talented and mercurial this year,” Boehm asserts.

Avilez Wins with Mexico in South Korea

Nineteen-year old FC Dallas goalkeeper Carlos Avilez earned some hardware with the Mexican U-20 National Team. El Tri won the Suwon JS Cup in Korea. Interestingly, Avilez in is the only member who doesn’t live in Mexico.
