FRISCO, Texas (March 10, 2023) – North Texas SC has signed open trialist Tomas Pondeca for the upcoming 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season with club option for the 2024 season. Per team policy, additional terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
Pondeca becomes the fifth open trialist North Texas SC has signed since 2019.
Pondeca, 21, made his debut for the Futsal USMNT on March 3, 2020, versus Slovakia. In the 2021 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, Pondeca won the Young Player Award presented by Scotiabank. During the competition he found the back of the net two times for the USMNT and helped qualify to the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania. Pondeca registered 17 appearances and six goals for Futsal USMNT.
“Tomas attended our 2023 Open Tryouts and stood out as a really interesting player,” said North Texas SC General Manager Matt Denny. “He scored in two out of our three preseason matches. He has continued to show his ability in training since getting invited to our preseason camp as a trialist.”
Pondeca attended Marcus High School and played for the varsity program between 2016-20. He scored 18 goals in 45 appearances for the Marauders during his sophomore and junior year. In 2019, Pondeca was named one of the 250 Allstate All-Americans in the nation. Pondeca was named to the district 6-6A first team in during the 2019 season.
