FC Dallas Brings the Brimstone Cup Home with 300th Win in Club History

FRISCO — FC Dallas became the second MLS club to reach the 300-win threshold with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday. The Brimstone Cup returned to Frisco and the match included multiple milestones for some FCD players along the way.

Reggie Cannon, who notched his first MLS assist on FCD’s first goal of the game, said being a part of the historical win carries a special meaning for he and the other Homegrowns.

“I think you have a certain responsibility as a Homegrown to come up through the Academy and always play for the first team,” Cannon said. “That’s your dream, and that’s what all kids aspire to be coming through the MLS academy. It’s ecstatic, really.”

After Carlos Gruezo opened the game up in the first half with a goal, Kellyn Acosta scored his first MLS goal of the season just five minutes after he was subbed on in the second half. Victor Ulloa set up Acosta outside of the 16-yard box, and Acosta fired into the back-right corner of the net past FCD Academy-product Richard Sanchez to extend FCD’s lead to 2-0.

“Definitely excited to get on the score sheet,” Acosta said. “That was a big win, it was huge. I thought it was a great bounce back for us from last week, so everyone’s happy with the result. We celebrated the win now, and now we turn our focus onto Houston for next weekend.”

It was also a special day for Jesus Ferreira, who subbed into Saturday’s match, marking his first appearance of the 2018 season. His substitution marked the first time in MLS history a single team has seen six Homegrowns on the field at one time.

Reto Ziegler said winning the battle for the Brimstone Cup and earning the 300th win along the way means a lot to the team. He hopes to have made the club and its fans proud after taking down Chicago.

"It’s a big achievement, but what counts is what we do this season," Ziegler said. "Of course, we know that FC Dallas had success in the past and we want to continue that history, but what counts is at the end of the season where we are."
