STANDINGS: FC Dallas Jumps to First Place After July 4th Win

FRISCO — FC Dallas jumped over Sporting Kansas City and into first place in the Western Conference after earning three points in two games last week, including a comeback victory over Atlanta United FC. Just one point separates FCD and the rest of the west, and Dallas still holds the most points per game in the Western Conference.

A Sporting KC loss to Real Salt Lake and draw against Toronto FC dropped the Midwest team from first to third place in the west. Los Angeles FC leaped over Sporting in the standings and Major League Soccer’s newest team now sits firmly in second place.

FCD now turns its attention to the Chicago Fire for its match on July 14 at Toyota Stadium. Chicago is coming off a 3-2 road loss at the hands of the Vancouver Whitecaps, which dropped the Fire out of a playoff spot if the season ended today. It currently stands in sixth place after it was passed up by the Montreal Impact this past week.

Real Salt Lake won both of its matches last week, including a 2-0 home victory over FC Dallas, and moved up from fifth place to fourth.

There wasn’t much movement across the rest of the Western Conference this past week, but Seattle Sounders FC managed to jump up a spot ahead of the Colorado Rapids. Seattle defeated the Rapids in Colorado and drew against the New England Revolution last week, earning four points in two games.

The Golden Boot Race is still a runaway after Josef Martinez added to his score total with two goals against FCD on July 4 and one more against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday. He currently leads the pack with 18 goals and leads the rest of MLS by seven goals.
